Get a Text When Your Game Server Goes Down

Run your own Minecraft, Valheim, Terraria or Palworld server, or any other? gamecheck texts you when it crashes or stops answering, again when it's back up, and, if you like, when friends join. It's silent the rest of the time, so run it every minute.

What the texts look like

Minecraft: 2 players joined - Steve, Alex

It waits for two failed checks in a row before saying a server is down, so a normal restart doesn't set it off.

1. Get your API key

It's on your account screen. No account yet? Start a free trial, then add your mobile number on the account screen so alerts come by text.

Easiest: run uxsend once. It asks for the key and saves it, and the other example programs then find it automatically. Or set it yourself in USERALERTX_API_KEY.

2. Download and run it every minute

Linux: gamecheck.sh. Run crontab -e and add:

* * * * * /home/you/gamecheck.sh -g minecraft -l /srv/minecraft/logs/latest.log

Windows: gamecheck.ps1. One command in a Command Prompt (change the path):

schtasks /create /sc minute /mo 1 /tn "UserAlertX gamecheck" /tr "powershell -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File C:\UserAlertX\gamecheck.ps1 -Game valheim -Log C:\valheim\server.log"

Test without sending: set USERALERTX_DRYRUN=1 (Mac/Linux) or $env:USERALERTX_DRYRUN="1" (PowerShell), and it shows the text it would send instead.

3. Pick your game

  • Presets: minecraft (port 25565, plus who joined), valheim (the server program, plus who joined), terraria (port 7777), palworld (the server program).
  • Any other game: give the server's process name (-p / -Process) or its TCP port (-t / -Port).
  • Crash lines: add -m 'Exception|crash' (-Match on Windows) to also get a text when a crash line shows up in the log.

All options are at the top of the file.

Good to know

  • Cost: 1 token per text. Join texts on a busy server add up, so leave out the log option if you only want up/down.
  • Run it somewhere else if you can: if the whole machine goes down, a check running on it can't send the text.
